Equine Assisted Rehabilitation
for patients with or after cancer
Horses are found to be great additions to cancer patient therapy. From walking alongside a horse to riding atop one, equine therapy can have amazing impacts on both cancer patients and their loved ones.
Horses are one of the few animals that work hard to form a connection with a human. Horses respond to patients in unique ways, such as mirroring their emotions. Horses are even known to sync their heartbeat with their rider (or walker), fostering a deep connection.
Equine assisted rehabilitation is a form of physical rehabilitation. It provides a space for personal empowerment, reduced anxiety and a much-needed change of scenery.
How does it work?
A 30 minute individual therapy session with a Hippotherapy qualified Occupational Therapist and an experienced horse handler.
The session is specifically designed to work on you current needs and difficulties.
Sessions may in some cases be claimed from your medical aid.
Equine assisted rehabilitation sessions form part of your bigger rehabilitation plan.

Therapeutic Horse Riding
vs
Horse Riding Lessons
What is the difference?
Equine Assisted Rehabilitation includes a specific treatment plan created by a Hippotherapy qualified Occupational Therapist. The OT is presented during your session.
Therapeutic Horse Riding is a follow on from EAR. THR usually involves more time on the horse and is directed by an experienced instructor and horse handler.. A treatment plan is still integrated, but the OT is not present.
Horse riding lessons are offered to anyone who wants to learn to ride. No treatment plan is implemented but should be directed by an experienced instructor and horse handler.
